About: Westgate And Birchington Golf Club

Westgate And Birchington Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Kent. The club was first formed in 1893.

The golf course at Westgate-on-Sea was originally established on land that was part of Westgate Farm, leased by the Westgate-on-Sea Golf Association from Coutts Bank after a decline in building on the land in the 1890s. The course initially featured 6 holes upon its opening on May 20th, 1893, and expanded to 9 holes by 1908, crossing over to the other side of the railway line.

In 1913, the course underwent remodeling under the management of a newly formed limited company, and by 1919, it had evolved into an 18-hole course, before being acquired by Arthur Read at an auction. Post-World War II changes included the absorption of members from the closed Hengrove Golf Club, positioned south of Westgate, many of whom joined the Westgate and Birchington Golf Club, bringing along numerous trophies and influencing the club's competitive history.
