Whitehead Golf Club

The establishment of Whitehead Golf Course dates back to 1904, when it was originally developed after a meeting in the Victoria Cafe by a group of Whitehead residents. The layout of the course was first drafted on an ordnance map, borrowing rules and bye-laws from Malone, Royal Belfast, and Larne Golf Clubs, and was constructed by George Morrow for a cost of 114 pounds.

In 1908, the course was rebuilt in the Donegall area, and then again relocated to its current Bentra location along with a new clubhouse in 1935. A subsequent move to Muldersleigh Hill occurred in 1970, which is where Whitehead Golf Course currently resides, having undergone numerous modifications over time.

Whitehead Golf Course is notable for its historical sites, with the current layout on Muldersleigh Hill featuring eight locations of ancient significance, four of which lie within the course boundary. Among these, the 2nd green is situated on an ancient site known as Rath-Cimbaeith, a hillfort from the early 1st millennium.

The 3rd fairway encompasses the historic site of an ancient church and burial place, while to the left of the 10th fairway existed an old graveyard. The discovery of two stone axe heads during the construction of the original 4th green ties the course to its ancient past, and these artefacts now contribute to the Rath-Cimbaeith Trophy contested annually on the course.
