York Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Yorkshire. The club was first formed in 1904.
York Golf Club's course was designed by the renowned J.H. Taylor and established in 1904, originally located on York's historic Knavesmire before moving to its current location. The course at Strensall reflects the characteristic lowland heath style, presenting a mixed terrain of parkland and heathland.
The course was initially laid out by members and had to contend with various interferences such as grazing cattle and poor drainage. After its move to Strensall, J.H. Taylor utilized the area's natural hazards to enhance the course's challenges, which spans around 6000 yards and was known to be one of the longest in Yorkshire during its golden years.
York Golf Club's course holds a history of military influence, with strong connections and a membership that included distinguished figures such as HRH Prince Arthur of Connaught. Notable is long-serving professional Ted Cheal, who was integral to the club's history and development, even after being wounded in World War I.
The course has evolved over time with strategic additions of birch copses and the natural re-seeding of plants, which have shaped its aesthetic while maintaining the heathland character. York Golf Club also invests in ecological management of the course, understanding the importance of protecting rare plant communities.
In 1997, York Golf Club acquired the course from the Ministry of Defence, further solidifying its place in the region. The course has undergone significant investment, including a five-year development programme that has reshaped bunkers, created new tees, and improved the overall aesthetics and playability.
York Golf Club's course is recognized for its memorable holes, particularly the signature 7th hole, and a challenging closing stretch that includes par 4 doglegs and a par 3 with a narrow, sloping green. These features exemplify the careful design and ongoing enhancements that cater to golfers of all skill levels.
