Ardglass is a links, 18 hole golf course in Down. The course first opened on this site in 1896.
The Ardglass Golf Course, an 18-hole links course, was established in Ardglass, Down, along the north-east coast of Ireland. It features a natural setting and is known for its unique golf holes and location near the Irish Sea, which is visible from all 18 tees and greens and affects play on eight holes.
Notably, the golf course utilizes the world's oldest building as a clubhouse, which has origins as a fortified warehouse from the 15th century, with its initial construction dating no later than 1405, and with historical ties to Norman knight Sir John De Courcy's 1177 invasion of Ireland.
The origins of Ardglass Golf Club date back to 1896 with a layout created under the guidance of the Rev Thomas MacAfee, which started as a 7-hole course. Over time, the course expanded, becoming a 9-hole links by 1907 and eventually developing into an 18-hole layout in the late 1960s upon acquisition of additional land.
Continued development over the years has seen the acquisition and integration of more land around Coney Island Bay, leading to the current course configuration that aims to provide a challenging and enjoyable experience. Even today, improvements and upgrades are ongoing to enhance the course for players of all skill levels.
