About: Campsie

Campsie is a parkland, 18 hole golf course in Dunbartonshire. The course first opened on this site in 1897.

The golf course was formally inaugurated on the 4th of May 1897, with officers including a President and Captain appointed, and the course was designed by Willie Auchterlonie, the Open Championship winner of 1893. The nine-hole course designed by Auchterlonie was opened on the 26th of June 1897 as part of Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations with Miss Ina King of Antermony hitting the inaugural drive.

After adjustments due to the game's evolution, on 24th May 1914, new ground was added, expanding the 9-hole layout, and the course opening was led by W G Peareth Kincaid Lennox of Lennox Castle. The Great War (1914-1918) largely decentralized course maintenance, but post-war revitalization in 1920 led to growth and the club's alignment with the Scottish Golf Union.

By 1928, discussions for expanding the course were initiated but did not materialize due to disagreements with the landowners. Various challenges such as clubhouse fires, economic downturns, and the impact of the Second World War influenced the course's history, but it continued to persist and develop despite these adversities.

The 18-hole course extension was finally realized in 1982, marking a significant milestone in the club's history, with continued improvements to the course overseen by head Green Keeper Stephen Bache since his appointment in 1988. Cliff Hanley officially opened the newly extended 18-hole course, reinforcing the ongoing commitment to enhance the course's features.
