Angus & Dundee
Forfar is a parkland, 18 hole golf course in Angus & Dundee. The course first opened on this site in 1871.
Forfar Golf Course was established in 1871 when James Brodie secured permission from Colonel Dempster of Dunnichen to lay out an 18-hole course, designed by Tom Morris of St Andrews, on fifty acres of land. The terrain featured challenging "rig and furrow" undulations and was adorned with whins and broom.
In 1920, membership reached 541, enabling the club to purchase the course for £700, and by 1926, course alterations recommended by five-time Open Champion James Braid were carried out. His suggestions for the course improvement are displayed in the clubhouse.
Notably, in 1932, Robert Dornan, the Club Professional at Forfar, made history by winning the Scottish PGA Championship on his home course, setting a record margin and beating the previous lowest total by five strokes. Subsequently, in 1965, Eric Brown won the same championship at Forfar, adding to his accolades which included playing on four Ryder Cup teams.
The golf course has hosted several prestigious national events, illustrated by the Scottish PGA Championships in 1932 and 1965, the Scottish Boys Championships in 1976 and 1980, the Girls Home Internationals in 1997, and the Scottish Boys Under 16s in 2011. Among the victors of these tournaments were renowned players like Alastair Webster, A Glen, and Ben Kinsley.
The club has had a history of charity matches and celebrated players like Sandy Saddler, who represented Scotland 22 times and was a noted performer in the Walker Cup. The course's set of trophies includes historic accolades like the Dunnichen Medal from 1890 and the Bruce Medal from 1869.
The Forfar Golf Club has affiliations with notable golfing personalities including Bill Callander and Stuart Wilson, reflecting a strong presence in the sport's community. Wilson's achievements include winning the Amateur Championship in 2004 at St Andrews and earning the Silver Medal at the 2004 Open Championship.
