Argyll & Bute

Glencruitten is a parkland, 18 hole golf course in Argyll & Bute.
James Braid's design is tucked among the hills of the Glencruitten Estate, just outside of Oban in Argyll, Scotland. It's a landscape rich in biodiversity, with beautiful springtime hues from harebells and whins, mature trees including Scots Pines protected by Tree Preservation Orders, and recent plantings that promise to enhance the course's beauty. The local fauna, featuring Buzzards, Pheasants, Heron, and Deer, as well as the intriguing historical element of a vitrified Roman fort on the hill of the 4th hole, contribute to the course's allure and ecological appeal.
The golf course was established in the early 1900s. Its 18-hole layout traverses challenging terrain that showcases Braid's expertise as a course architect.
The maintenance of Glencruitten Golf Course is led by a greenkeeping team committed to improving the drainage and consistently producing high-quality greens. These efforts have made the greens some of the best in the Argyll and Bute area. The course is not easily mastered, with a Par of 62 that belies the challenge it presents; its topography features considerable changes in elevation and numerous Par 3s that require skill and precision from both professionals and amateurs.
In 1916, the golf course was at risk of closure and repurposing for agriculture but was maintained by Major Shelley-Bontein who used it for the leisure of service personnel in WWI. The course maintains military ties, with the Isis and Stokes Cups having origins linked to naval associations from WWII.
