Guildford is a parkland, 18 hole golf course in Surrey. The course first opened on this site in 1901.
Guildford Golf Club was established in 1886 on Merrow Downs, in Surrey and is sited on typical Surrey downland surrounded by woodlands. The course was once part of the Onslow Estate and has historical links to the local racecourse which existed until 1870.
The club was founded by Colonel W. Bannatyne, Major W. Pontifex, and Mr E.L. Hooper, with support from the 4th Earl of Onslow. The design of Guildford Golf Club expanded from its original six holes to eighteen by 1901, moving the course eastwards to its current location.
In 1925, the committee sought the expertise of golf course architect J.H. Taylor and his partner Mr Hawtree to improve the course; by 1927, they had introduced new holes, reduced blind shots, and added bunkers. The last significant update to the course before the late 1900s occurred under the direction of Howard Swan, focusing on the restoration of the course's original design features.
John Henry Taylor, one of the game's historical figures and a member of the 'Great Triumvirate,' was responsible for the 1925 design improvements. Taylor, a five-time Open Championship winner, was also a significant influence on golf architecture during his lifetime.
