Hallowes is a parkland, 18 hole golf course in Yorkshire. The course first opened on this site in 1890.
Golf commenced at Hallowes in 1890/1891 when local enthusiasts were granted permission to play on fields owned by farmer Ashton, which led to the formation of Dronfield Golf Club by 1892 with a 9-hole course. By the autumn of 1896, the course was expanded to 18 holes, and the club renamed to Hallowes Golf Club, officially joining the Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs in 1898.
Animal grazing and makeshift hazards characterized the course in the early 1900s, but by 1906, expansion and improvements continued with a lease of additional land, leading to the creation of new holes and the planting of trees starting in 1911. Membership grew, and by 1913, the course was recognized as an interesting challenge in the district.
In 1920, land purchases allowed for further expansion and course remodeling, resulting in a course length of 6,000 yards by 1932. Water source development in 1935 allowed the course to sustain its water requirements independently.
During World War II, parts of the course were repurposed for agriculture by the War Office but were restored in 1954, leading to the establishment of a new first hole and practice area, along with renovated bunkers across the course. The construction of the Dronfield Bypass in 1972 required significant alterations, including the loss and replacement of several holes, with the restructured section opening in August 1973.
Visitor green fees are available. Weekday rates are £60 for 1 ball, £120 for 2 balls, £180 for 3 balls and £220 for 4 balls. Weekend rates (after 3pm on Saturday and all day Sunday) are £75 for 1 ball, £150 for 2 balls, £225 for 3 balls and £260 for 4 balls.
