About: Letchworth (The Heritage)

Letchworth (The Heritage) is a parkland, 18 hole golf course in Hertfordshire. The course first opened on this site in 1905.

Established in 1905, the golf course at Letchworth Golf Club was originally a nine-hole course, which subsequently expanded to an 18-hole course following advice from Harry Vardon in 1910. This expansion, including a plan estimated at £500, opened in October of that year with a celebratory round played by Vardon and James Braid.

The golf course is characterized by straight ridge and furrow plough marks across multiple fairways, a remnant of its agricultural past under John Williamson's ownership during the Napoleonic wars. Significant modifications to the golf course took place after the devastation caused by Dutch Elm Disease in 1976, with the loss of over 180 mature elms necessitating extensive tree planting schemes.

In 1999, the course underwent a substantial redesign with the acquisition of adjacent land, leading to the creation of three new holes and the extension of four existing ones, resulting in an increased course length by over 400 yards. The course has also seen the addition of a six-hole Academy Course and Practice Range, enhancing its training facilities.

Throughout its history, the golf course has served various purposes, including being a Home Guard training ground during World War II and accommodating the Women’s Land Army. Despite challenges such as pressure to return the land to agriculture, the course has maintained its golfing heritage with additions and alterations over the years.

Green fees vary depending on the season, day of the week, and player type. Winter rates are in effect from October 30th to March 25th, while summer rates apply from March 26th to October 29th.

Twilight green fees are available after 5 PM for £27.
