Loughrea

The Loughrea Golf Course was established with its original layout at Knockanima/Earslpark, where one of the holes was notable for its lakeside location by the Woodford road. The specific date when the course commenced operation is not clearly defined, but it was before the outbreak of the Great War, and by 1914 a committee had been formed to oversee the club's affairs.

In the 1920s, the golf course gained broader community support, and in the late 1930s, it hired a resident professional, J. Gaffney, who set a course record. However, during World War II, activity at the course diminished significantly and operation effectively ceased with only a few dedicated enthusiasts, such as Paddy Corcoran, maintaining the golf course.

Post World War II, efforts led by Dr. Martin Dyar culminated in the acquisition of land for a new 9-hole course at Graigue, which officially opened in 1954. The course location was moved to this site from the original layout, replacing it with a new 9-hole spread that was later expanded.

The golf course was upgraded to 18 holes in 1992, thanks to the design work of Eddie Hackett, a noted golf course architect in Ireland. A further expansion took place in 2002, which included the purchase and development of additional land, adding length to the course and resulting in four new holes, with adjustments made to three others.

Weekday green fees are €35 and weekend/bank holiday green fees are €40. Twilight rates are available after 6:30 PM Monday-Friday and after 5:00 PM Saturday and Sunday for €20.

Society rates start at €25 per person on weekdays and €30 on weekends/bank holidays, with a minimum of 20 players required. Advance booking is required and is subject to availability.
