Muirfield is a links, 18 hole golf course in Lothians. The course first opened on this site in 1891.
Muirfield, officially named The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, was established by designer Old Tom Morris in 1891. It is located in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland, and features a championship golf course known for its challenging holes and penal rough.
The course, which is part of The Open rota, is laid out on a slightly sloped piece of ground and is characterized by engaging green complexes and a lack of elevation changes that provide extensive views. Notable features include the elite club's prestigious history and the tradition of hosting The Open, but the course itself is described as lacking a variety of inspiring hole designs, with the exception of the world-class 13th hole.
Muirfield's design reflects a focus on hosting high-level tournament golf with fairly generous fairways and punishing rough that presents a significant challenge to golfers. The course holds prominence for its traditional aspects and has been compared to Augusta National in the United States for its prestige within Scotland.
Visitors are welcomed on Tuesdays and Thursdays by reservation, with a highly recommended and traditional lunch buffet provided. The club enforces a pace of play that is brisk and a handicap minimum to maintain course flow, and patrons are expected to adhere to a strict dress code while dining.
A previous policy of not admitting female members was changed in 2017 to reflect modern inclusivity and to ensure the return of The Open tournament to the renowned venue. The club's traditions also include allowing golfers to play their own ball in the morning and engaging in alternate shot with partners in the afternoon.
