Sandwell Park is a parkland, 18 hole golf course in Staffordshire. The course first opened on this site in 1897.
Sandwell Park Golf Club was established following a meeting in January 1895, resulting in the creation of the West Bromwich Golf Club and the opening of a 9-hole course on May 11 of the same year. The course was located in the grounds of Joshua Fellows's residence in West Bromwich, with initial membership limited to 50.
In October 1896, the consideration for a new 9-hole course in the Sandwell Park Estate emerged, leading to the move and establishment of Sandwell Park Golf Club, with the first ball struck on Christmas Day 1897. The golf course was expanded to eighteen holes with professional golfers Harry Vardon and J.H. Taylor playing an exhibition match there in November 1898.
Notable course architect H.S. Colt was involved in a significant redesign of the course in 1911. The current course, which retains many of the changes Colt made, reopened in September 1912.
In the late 1920s, Sandwell Park Golf Club became one of the first, if not the first, to allow steel-shafted golf clubs in competitions, with the Local Rule instituted in June 1929, months before the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews legalized steel shafts in November of the same year.
The club endured challenges such as the erection of electricity pylons and adjustments due to World War II but managed to purchase the freehold of the land in 1946, ensuring stability and the possibility for further improvements. A notable clubhouse renovation was completed in 1993, cementing the club's facilities for members and guests.
Today, the golf course at Sandwell Park is characterized by undulating tree-lined fairways, natural hazards, strategically placed bunkers, and is recognized for its sandy subsoil and turf quality. The club continues to host significant golfing events, including the West Midlands Amateur Strokeplay and the Staffordshire Boys Open competitions.
