Scarcroft is a parkland, 18 hole golf course in Yorkshire. The course first opened on this site in 1937.
Scarcroft Golf Club was established to accommodate the growing demand for golf in the City of Leeds as the established city golf clubs were unable to meet the increasing number of membership applications and on-course playing time. When the course opened, it was characterized by its openness and sparse tree coverage, offering little chance of losing balls, and the holes today remain the same as at inception.
In approximately 1938, Scarcroft Golf Club hosted its first county competition, won by Alex Caygill from Cleckheaton, and utilized its practice area as a parking space and changing facility with a large marquee. However, the onset of World War II in 1939 brought about significant changes, including a mandatory blackout of the clubhouse and the introduction of a full-sized snooker table to entertain members during firewatch duties.
Post-World War II, the club experienced an influx of applications, notably from war veterans, leading to expansions of the facilities, including the men's locker room and the bar. In the late 1980s, further substantial expansions and refurbishments were carried out to enhance the club's offerings to its members.
The course is an 18-hole layout set in parkland surroundings and is close to the cities of Leeds, Harrogate, and York. Scarcroft Golf Club is known for its welcoming atmosphere and high-quality social facilities, and as of 2024, offers a range of membership packages for adults and juniors, complete with additional benefits.
