Thetford is a heathland, 18 hole golf course in Norfolk. The course first opened on this site in 1912.
Thetford Golf Club was founded in 1912 and is located just over a mile from Thetford Town Centre, constructed on open sandy heath formerly known as Thetford Warren. The initial 18-hole, 6,000-yard course was designed by Charles Mayo, with later improvements contributed by Philip Ross-MacKenzie and James Braid, maintaining good drainage due to the sandy soil.
Post World War I, the surrounding landscape evolved from heathland to forest with the planting of pine trees by the Forestry Commission, consequently transitioning the course style. Notable alterations to the golf course layout were made following the construction of a new clubhouse in 1979 and the subsequent development of a new northern by-pass, leading to the creation of five new holes designed by Cameron Sinclair and Donald Steel.
The clubhouse's construction was unanimously supported at the 1978 AGM and was operational within the subsequent year. These developments coincided with significant alterations to the original layout, replacing five holes with longer and more dynamic ones, which after the hurricane of 1987, have integrated well with the older sections of the course.
Thetford Golf Club today is an expansive Par 72 course measuring almost 7,000 yards, providing an undulating terrain nestled amidst self-seeded trees from the neighboring Thetford Forest. As a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), the course is known for its ecological value, including varied wildlife and indigenous vegetation like gorse, broom, and heather.
