Trump Turnberry (Ailsa) is a links, 18 hole golf course in Ayrshire & Arran. The course first opened on this site in 1902.
Trump Turnberry's Ailsa course in Ayrshire, Scotland is widely recognized as one of the premier golf courses globally, known for its scenery and challenging links golf. The course was originally designed by Willie Fernie in 1902 with further redesigns by MacKenzie Ross in 1951 and Martin Hawtree in 2016.
Noteworthy features include elevation changes, sand dunes, and rocky ocean cliffs, as well as a significant stretch of holes from #4 to #17, which are celebrated for their design complexity. The 12th hole also holds historical significance with a monument to airmen who perished during the World Wars when the course served as an airstrip for the Royal Air Force.
Renowned holes on the course include the 9th and 11th, which are compared in majesty to those at Cypress Point, and the 10th, an exceptional par five. An iconic lighthouse between the 9th and 10th holes serves as a halfway house, offering refreshments and accommodation suites.
Turnberry's Ailsa holds a place in golf history, notably for the 1977 'Duel in the Sun' during the Open Championship where Tom Watson emerged victorious over Jack Nicklaus. Watson nearly won again, at age 59, during the 2009 Open Championship, but fell short in a playoff against Stewart Cink.
