About: Windermere

Windermere is a parkland, 18 hole golf course in Cumbria. The course first opened on this site in 1891.

Windermere Golf Club was established on March 14th, 1891, after George Lowe, a professional from Lytham St Annes Golf Club, visited Cleabarrow Fells and recommended the creation of a nine-hole golf course. The golf course was initially inaugurated with a lease from the Church, and a one-acre plot was purchased for the construction of a clubhouse, starting with 34 male members.

In 1892, Windermere Golf Club expanded the course to 18 holes and introduced Ladies’ membership, growing to 94 male and 36 female members at that time. Over the years, the course saw various developments, including the purchase of the full 200 acres in 1912 and the renovation of all 18 greens to USGA standards, which was completed in 2005.
