David Thomas
Dave Thomas (1934–2013) was a Welsh golf course architect and former professional. When arthritis ended his playing career around 1969, he reflected: "I have very fond memories of my playing career but by 1969 my back had gone and it was time to do something else... Someone suggested some design and architecture. Peter Alliss was involved and we became designers. Who would have thought all these years on I would be close to designing 150 courses?" With Alliss he designed The Belfry's Brabazon Course (four Ryder Cups), and over 100 courses in total. His philosophy emphasised world-class courses that were visually striking yet easy to walk. He was PGA captain (2001) and received honorary life membership from the PGA and European Tour.
