Harry Colt

Harry Colt (1869–1951), born Henry Shapland Colt in London, was an English golf course architect who designed or redesigned over 300 courses across six continents. A Cambridge-educated solicitor who captained the university golf club, he transitioned to course design and served as Sunningdale's first Secretary (1901–1913). Colt favoured strategic design with natural routing; he collaborated with Charles Alison, John Morrison, and Alister MacKenzie. His masterpiece is Pine Valley (1918, with George Crump), ranked #1 in America. Other celebrated works include Muirfield, Royal Portrush, Royal Liverpool, Sunningdale, Wentworth, and Swinley Forest. He holds the record for most courses in Golf Magazine's Top 100. A founding member of the R&A Rules Committee (1897).
