Ted Ray
Ted Ray (1877–1943) was a British professional who won The Open in 1912 at Muirfield and the U.S. Open in 1920. His 1912 victory was the first to lead outright after every round since The Open went to 72 holes; he won by four shots from Vardon. Ray was known for his distinctive appearance—large, pipe in mouth, trilby hat—and a swing described as "the lurching charge of a Cape buffalo." His philosophy on distance: "Hit it a bloody sight harder." He succeeded Vardon as professional at Ganton (1903) and moved to Oxhey in 1912. Ray served as captain of the British team in the inaugural Ryder Cup (1927).
