Willie Fernie

Willie Fernie (1855–1924) was a Scottish professional and golf course architect from St Andrews. He won the 1883 Open at Musselburgh and served as professional at Royal Troon for 37 years. Fernie designed or modified the Ailsa course at Turnberry, made alterations to the Old Course at St Andrews and Royal Troon, and created Appleby, Dumfries and County, and other layouts across Scotland and England. His work reflected the classical links tradition: natural routing, strategic bunkering, and respect for the existing terrain. Fernie was part of the generation that shaped many of Britain's greatest courses in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
