Wanstead is a par 69, parkland layout set over two plots of land in East London.

Front 9

The tough front 9 starts with a gentle opening 1st hole, then players walk 100 metres by road onto "the field".

The field contains four of the toughest par 4s on the course, where players must navigate out of bounds, trees; and even a pond on the stroke index 1, 5th hole.

Members know that leaving the field with their scorecard still in tact is a treasured achievement.

Back to the main plot of the land, the player is greeted with two birdie opportunities at the short par 4, 6th and the reachable par 5, 7th. A tough par 4 and par 3 combination, at 8 and 9, round out a very challenging nine holes of parkland golf.

Back 9

The back 9 is much more scoreable, with 6 par 4s, which are all a driver and a wedge for longer hitters; 17 and 18 are driveable, risk reward par 4s for these players.

The best hole on the course is arguably the strategic 12th hole, which requires a choice whether to hit driver or lay-up, for the approach shot to a raised, banked green with a huge bunker and deadly drop-off to the right of the green.

The 15th is a brutally difficult 170 yard par 3; with a green only 12 yards wide and bunkers, banks and trees either side of two tier green.

This is then followed by another par 3, the signature 16th hole which requires a 150 yard shot over a huge lake.

The back 9 is more scoreable, and also a fantastic match play back 9; with matches often being decided by whether a player has the nerve to stay out of the water on the 16th and then finish with birdies on the 17th or 18th.
