Frederick George Hawtree

Frederick George Hawtree (1883–1955) founded the world's longest continuous golf architectural practice in 1912. A former greenkeeper at Sundridge Park, he collaborated with James Braid (1910–12) and later J.H. Taylor (from 1922), handling day-to-day design while Taylor met clients. Hawtree favoured practical, detailed work on classic layouts. His firm designed or redesigned Royal Birkdale and Royal Porthcawl among others, and continued through his son Fred W. and grandson Martin. He established the family's reputation for meticulous green and bunker work on championship links and inland courses across Britain.
