Moortown Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Yorkshire. The club was first formed in 1909.
Established in 1909, Moortown Golf Course was designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie, who is recognised for creating Augusta National, Cypress Point, and Royal Melbourne, among other renowned courses. The course, situated on 175 acres of land at Black Moor, was initially laid out to play nine holes as quickly as possible and then expanded to eighteen holes.
Among the distinct elements of Moortown Golf Course, its bunkers were noted for their resemblance to natural seaside contours, and the greens were designed large with significant undulations, both features that were commented upon at the time of the course's inception. Dr. Mackenzie operated as a constructional adviser and active Vice-President for the club, influencing the course's development until 1928 when his brother Charles took over as a course consultant until 1933.
Dr. Alister MacKenzie embarked on a 'World Tour' in 1926, enhancing his international reputation as a course designer, having already established an impressive portfolio including the Jockey Club at Buenos Aires and Mar De Plato in Argentina. In the United States, his collaboration with Robert Hunter yielded the Valley Club at Montecito, the Meadow Club on Mt. Tamalpais, and redesign work on Pebble Beach.
Moortown Golf Course has been recognized for its rich history, notably as the host of the first British Ryder Cup in 1929 and is considered one of the country’s premier inland golf courses. Over the years, it has hosted a wide array of professional and amateur tournaments, attracting celebrated winners like Sir Nick Faldo and Sir Michael Bonallack.
