Goswick Golf Club is a members' golf club, in Northumberland. The club was first formed in 1889.
The Goswick Golf Course began its journey when a group of golf enthusiasts met on October 21st, 1889, in Berwick-upon-Tweed to discuss the formation of a golf club and the assessment of suitable land. The subsequent course was established on naturally occurring links land located south of Berwick along the Northumbrian coast, with an initial 9-hole layout introduced in April 1890 which expanded to 18 holes by 1894.
Distinguished course designer James Braid was involved in an extensive reworking of the course starting from 1930, making recommendations for improvements, and by 1932, the alterations, including significant changes to 13 holes, were complete. While the landscape of seaside courses typically lacks vegetation due to sandy soil and salt air, Goswick incorporates gorse, which has been a distinctive feature of the course since more gorse bushes were planted in 1935.
World War II posed significant challenges for Goswick, with the course itself becoming part of the defensive measures against potential German landings. The southern end of the course was utilized by the War Department for military practice, leading to considerable post-war restoration efforts to remove debris and manage wildlife that had taken over the land.
In the 1960s, the course underwent further developments with the addition of the 5th and 6th holes designed by Frank Pennink, elevating Goswick to a championship standard. Despite the club's inclination to prioritize the course over the clubhouse, notable improvements were made to the clubhouse in the following decades, with a substantial renovation of the lounge area occurring in 1980.
Recent recognition of Goswick's quality came from the R&A, which selected Goswick as a regional qualifying venue for the Open Championship on multiple occasions between 2008 and 2022. The course, which continues to invest in its facilities and sustainability efforts, is recognized as one of the top courses in Northumberland and England overall.
